Today we are talking with Nonso a male fashion influencer making his mark on Instagram. Nonso shares with us his favorite presets on cultivating a sharp Instagram feed and how he continually gets paid work as a fashion influencer.
Vanessa: Tell us a little bit about yourself?
My name is Chukwunonso (Nonso) Ezekwueche. I am originally a trained and licensed Doctor of Pharmacy from Nigeria. I moved to Canada in 2017 and I am pursuing my passion as a men’s fashion and lifestyle influencer.
I have worked with several brands both locally and internationally to increase their brand awareness, brand recognition, and brand loyalty.
I help create visually appealing and highly resonating content in the form of pictures and videos showcasing their products.
My tagline is “showing men how to dress without breaking the bank”
How long have you been on Instagram?
About 6 years. I joined Instagram precisely on June 11, 2013
When did you see your first surge of followers?
So at first, it was hard to grow but as soon as I hit my first 1000 followers, my account naturally started growing by about 20-30 new followers daily.
What lead to this spike?
I believe this was due in part to my excellent content which resonated with them and made my posts hit the explore page more often and attracted new followers. I was also engaging with similar accounts in my niche and this increased my exposure and popularity.
What made you choose to go into the fashion niche?
I have always had a flair for fashion. My father was a very fashionable man and I guess that was where it all stemmed from.
As a young boy growing up I would always watch him dressing up and I wanted to grow up so fast to be able to do the same. One day I even tried some of his clothes and I got the beating of my life lol.
When I learned about the platform Instagram I knew it was my opportunity to express my ideas and creativity fashion-wise
I see that your tagline is I show men how to dress w/o breaking the bank. How do you do that?
Oh, yea! I show/teach men how to dress on a budget and still look their best. I show them that they do not really need 1000 different outfits but a few good ones.
The secret is how you combine them.
What made you come up with that idea?
It has been a misconception that for a person to make a fashion statement, he must spend thousands of dollars on expensive designer clothes but I beg to differ.
I have seen countless people looking like they should be arrested by Fashion Police in their so-called “designer clothes”.
Vanessa: That is too funny! I have to say that reminds me of Donatella Versace.
Nonso: The truth is you can still look great in affordable (cheap) clothing. The secret is knowing what works for you and how to combine outfits and colours without looking like a circus clown lol.
How did you become a leading style influencer for Perry Ellis in 2019?
It was based on the number of times I collaborated with and mentioned them on my posts for that month.
Have you thought about using Like to Know it or Amazon to increase affiliate sales?
No, I have not thought in that line but I am always open to new things because nobody knows where the big break would come from.
So yeah I could use them in future.

Have you monetized your channel? If so how?
Yes, I get paid to create content for brands as well as promoting brands on my channel.
I always send them my rates card to choose a payment package that falls within their budget.
How do you approach brands for collaborations?
First I would find their email address by going on their Instagram page. I have a pitching template that I adapt to each brand and also a media kit I always send alongside.
I would usually send them emails and follow up with direct messages on Instagram just to tie all loose ends.
Where did you get your media template from?
I had someone create a media kit for me but if you are not willing to throw around a few bucks, there are some free templates on Canva and creative market place to play around with.
Also, google is a useful tool.
There is a plethora of templates on google to choose from and modify. Once you know the basic components of a pitch template, the rest is just the use of English and sentence construction.
How do you pitch brands via email?
- First of all, I introduce myself as an influencer and tell them what I like about their brand and how it would resonate with my audience.
- Secondly, I give them a break down of my Instagram stats and demographics in a clear and concise manner.
- I go ahead to tell them about the kind of content I would like to create for their brand and also welcome their opinions and feedback.
- Ultimately, the goal is to make them see the value in what you are offering.
- I never send my rates card at the same time as my pitch email because it could come off as desperate or thirsty. I secure their interest first and then I shoot.
- It takes a bit of rewriting and re-modifying to get a perfect pitch template. Keep it short, simple and straight to the point.
- No excessive greetings or cajoling.
How did you work out what to charge?
There are some websites such as influencemarketinghub.com that gives an estimate of what each influencer should charge based on their number of followers and engagement that I use sometimes.
It gives you a range so you don’t sell yourself short.
I also believe that each influencer should charge whatever they feel comfortable with based on the value they put on their work.
What are your favorite brands to collaborate with?
I especially love to collaborate with Shoes and clothing brands and I have worked with quite a bunch and always looking out for more.
I loved working with LinkedIn learning, Beckett Simonon and Original Penguins because they were not too rigid and they allowed me to be myself.
Are you working with any influencer agencies?
At the moment no, but I have worked with a few in the past that reached out to me.
What advice would you give to influencers that want to pitch brands but don’t know where to start?
I would advise them to take the first plunge and do not be scared.
There is bound to be lots of rejections at first for sure but staying consistent and creating good contents sets you apart from others.
Content is definitely king!
I would recommend scouting for brands on Instagram explore pages as well as top influencers pages. This I do all the time.
You could also register on influencers marketing platforms like Aspire IQ, Collabor8, Brandbassador, Glambassador. They pair you up with brands when there is a match.
You got this!!!
What are your goals for your IG channel?
I would love to be recognized as a highly rated go to mens’ fashion influencer and to work with big luxury brands on long term sponsorships. Ultimately, my end goal is to have my own luxury fashion line.
Your images are professional and they harmonize well together.
What tips do you have for fashion influencers that are aiming for a cohesive feed?
Thank you for the compliment. I take my pictures with a professional DSLR camera and edit in Adobe Lightroom using a similar preset.
I plan my posts with a planner app such as Planoly to see how my feed would look before I post on my Instagram feed.
Who are you looking to collaborate with now?
My goal is to collaborate with big brands such as Zara, Gucci, Fashionnova just to name a few.
What is the #1 strategy you have used on Instagram that you found paid large dividends?
Just being myself, being consistent and creating good content to attract potential collaborations
