Author, Mumpreneur & Influencer: Courtney Hanson talks about her success and the factors that helped get her there.
Courtney is a published author, blogger, online store owner and influencer with over 30k followers on Instagram. Today we chat with Courtney about how she established her brand and integrated a book deal and online store with her brand. Not only is she a multifaceted entrepreneur she is also a Mumpreneur which in my books is much more difficult.
Tell us a little bit about yourself:
My name is Courtney. I am a mama to three littles, a wife to a San Francisco Firefighter, as crafty as they come. I love all things do it yourself and interior design. I am also on a constant mommy journey in creating healthy littles who will turn into great humans!
I own an Etsy Shop called Sealed With A Kiss Gift and just published her first book “A Mompreneurs Guide to Success” in September of 2018.
How would you describe your brand?
My brand is all about living with purpose, and learning to be a kick-ass entrepreneur in the journey of motherhood! Real Motherhood while chasing your dreams and not losing sense of who you are as a woman.
Let’s face it, Parenting is messy and we have to stick together and learn to Parent with a Positive Purpose!
When did you start your journey as an influencer and brand?
What came first the blog or the book?
The blog I was tinkering in while writing the book. The book is what launched my brand and direction.
Did one inspire the other? If so why?
The book definitely lit me up for my passion for writing and helping other women know their worth to succeed.
I love your photography, it has a strong sense of personality. Who takes your photos?
What central message do you hope your audience will take away through following you?
The courage to live their passions while being amazing mothers and not feeling alone in the struggle. I love educating mamas every day in learning how to live their life without limits.
What 3 things does anyone starting in your industry need to know?
Be Consistent. Be Fearless. Plan Content.
What would you do differently if you were starting in your industry now?
I would have stayed true to my brand instead of saying yes to anything that came my way.
Vanessa: I think a lot of influencers feel they need to jump on opportunities that come their way to start their journey of building a portfolio and the fear of missing out of an opportunity. How did this affect you personally?
Courtney: I took on a vagina cream when I was pregnant that I normally would have never used or a foot brace for what reason that would flow in my brand or I thought I could make it was beyond me. I just felt I was “selling out” and wanted actual trust, respect and a flow to my page in all aspects.
Vanessa: Yes I totally agree, I did similar things in the beginning because I wanted to be an “influencer” and felt pressured to take what came my way so that I could build up a book. For instance, I tried a few different beauty creams or at home skin devices. But to be honest I am so low maintenance in my day to day life I am lucky to brush my hair little alone use a skin buffer every morning. While everything I recommended I did love. There were a few things sent out to me that I did not like such as supplements and told the brands I did not like the products and would not promote them. I offered to send them back and yet I still got a black mark from a few agencies for that.
Because of this reason I am more choosy with the agencies I work with too. I want to be with agencies that support organic recommendations that are honest. Not ones that penalize you for not working with bad products. (Aspire IQ) was my fav influencer platform until this happened several times.
Now I won’t take on anything unless I love it and do use it. From talking with many influencers they have all felt the same and this has lead to consumers being a little more skeptical of influencers. The key now is to really nurture the relationships with our audiences.
With Instagrams second round of their crack down on eliminating bots this month I believe it will get rid of a lot of fakers and let honest influencers that build real relationships stand out even further than before.
Which people or books have had the most influence on your growth and why?
- Girl Wash Your Face
- 5,4,3,2,1 Method
I am a total podcast nerd. Always wanting to learn more.
Vanessa: Me too! I binge on podcasts like there is no tomorrow. I am always on the hunt for my next series to listen too!
What are some of your favourite podcasts?
- Jenna Kutcher
- Rachel Hollis
- Julie Soloman
- Audrey Roloff
Are any tactics particularly effective in helping you grow your audience online?
Constant interaction, always replying to comments and making sure to post at ideal times when there is peak engagement.
Do you use any programs to make replying easier on IG?
I use PLANN to organize my content but everything else I carve out time each day to respond and make it as organic as possible.
What would you say is the #1 key to success in your business?
Maintaining a schedule and being intentional with how I spend my hours creating.
How do you do that with children?
Vanessa: I recently just had my second child and my schedule has gone out the window! I am even considering becoming a morning person! How would you advise mumpreneurs on how to set a schedule?
Courtney: I set times where I do batch scheduling so one night after bedtime I do Etsy, One morning before they wake up I do all my emails and IG Post for the week, one day we all do content planning together (its nice because I have incorporated them in with my business) so a lot of stuff we can do as a family.
I also let go of the “guilt” aspect and turned my mentality into that I am teaching them how much hard work goes into chasing your dreams.
Vanessa: I love that mindset. So many people just see the results but not all the hard work that goes into the results. Results are really just the tip of the iceberg. That is a great lesson to be teaching your children.
I also believe that this will show them not to give up. I don’t think a lot of people are honest about how much work goes into their success. This can lead people to think what they are doing is not working. The only way you can fail is if you give up.
Vanessa: I love that expression! I couldn’t tell you how many agencies I have worked with in the past that charged 10 times more and delivered half of what I did when I started my agency.
What’s most important to you when pursuing brand partnerships?
That it flows honestly with what I am pursuing and trying to put out there.
Vanessa: I think that is really important because consumers are becoming more skeptical of influencers due to the low barriers to entry, so anyone can come in and try and sell products dishonestly. Today it is more important than ever to be honest and build trust with your audience by providing value.
How has your blog changed since you started? Any specific turning points?
When I first started it was all about how to work at home on Etsy as a mom and has completely transformed into education for aspiring SAHM and just real, raw motherhood moments so people know we’re all human and that’s okay! I want to inspire people to want better for themselves!
Is there anything else you would like to tell us?
I see fear standing in the way of so many talented entrepreneurs and influencers.
To truly succeed you just have to get to a level of knowing your worth and then charging tax!
